Divorce during the year - can I claim duty credit for spouse?
I get divorce contained by the beggining of October 2007. In my tax return for 2007, can I claim non-refundable tariff credit for spouse? Also which tax form should I plague to show the change contained by my marital status? Thanks
Answers: You toll return is filed according to your status at the second day of the export tax year. You got divorced contained by October, so you would be filing as divorced for Dec 31. There may be a portion of the year that you can claim her as a dependent, but you have need of to check with a qualified due preparer for the correct information. The change surrounded by marital status is noted on the first page of your charge return where you check the boxes in relation to your status, simple as that.
If your marital status have changed, you are supposed to complete and send contained by this form (separately from your tax return) although hugely few people do:

You may be eligible for GST rebate now.
But no, you cannot claim rebate for your spouse. You will indicate that you are single on your tax return.
