Answers:
Purchaser pays - see info on Inland Revenue website http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/guidance/sd2.pdf...
definately the buyer. Its subdivision of the huge costs to buy a house, im sure its 1% of the purchase price,
Stamp duty is remunerated through the solicitor by the buyer. From 23 March 2006, it is;
FREE on properties underneath lb150,000,
1% upto 250,000,
3% from 250-500,000
4% on props 500,000+
they buyer at 1% this rises to 3% if the property is over lb250,000
Stamp duty is suffered by the buyer. The current rates are 0% upto lb150,000, 1% on the subsequent lb100,000, 3% on the subsequent lb250,000 and next 4% on anything above that. For example if you are buying a house at lb300,000 its calculated as follows:-

150,000 x 0% = lb0
100,000 x 1% = lb1,000
50,000 x 3% = lb1,500

Total stamp duty payable by buyer is lb2,500
