Answers:
It medium that you won't enjoy federal or state withholding taken out of your paycheck, as you are not expecting to enjoy a federal or state liability when you profile your 2007 federal and state charge returns. You will still own social warranty charge, 6.2% of paychecks, and medicare due, 1.45% of paychecks taken out of your paycheck. That you can't be exempted from.
It system you're 'exempt' (don't enjoy to pay) excise due to your age.
Well claiming exempt isn't lawful anymore...in good health, at smallest the method I read the exotic statute (as applied to your case). But, what it simply funds is that you are claiming that you won't owe any taxes at the downfall of the year. Therefore, your employer will not withhold any income toll, they will still clutch out the Social Security and Medi-Care taxes though.
It process that income duty will not be withheld from your wages. FICA taxes will still be withheld.

You can individual claim exempt if both of the following test are met:

1. You have $0 due liability concluding year.

2. You plausible expect to hold $0 import tax liability this year.

At age 16, you are almost undeniably still claimed as a dependent by your parents. As such, the most you can earn at a errand subject to withholding for 2007 is $5,350. If your earn any more than that, you will own a duty liability and would not be capable of claim EXEMPT from withholding.

If you know for a certainty that you'll earn smaller quantity than $5,350 you'll be OK. If you know or suspect that you might earn more, you should profile a unusual Form W-4 near your employer and cancel your EXEMPT claim as you are not eligible.
It routine you enjoy told your employer that you do not expect to breed plenty money to owe any income charge this year, so they shouldn't withhold any. They will still withhold social wellbeing and medicare taxes though - everybody have to reimburse those.

If you are 16, you are almost surely still a dependent of your parents. If so, you can trade name up to $5350 this year and not owe any federal income taxes. If you are not a dependent, the cut back is even highly developed.

So as long as you don't expect to formulate more than that, you are OK to wallet "exempt" on your W-4. If you devise you will fashion more than that, catch a investigational one and permeate it out as single, zilch allowances.

Depending on where on earth you live, you might owe some state or local income due even though you don't owe federal income toll.

And file exempt or owing import tax have zilch to do beside your age, as at smallest one responder said. Age doesn't business, it's income.
