How do you work in hours and minutes in excel?

I want to use an excel spreadsheet to work out payroll, so hence have need of to enter surrounded by background i.e. hours and minutes. The time format doesn't come across to work. If this is not on, can you suggest any other software?
Thanks

Answers:
right click on the cell, progress to 'format cell', and click on 'time'. If you want to convert the format, after after clicking on 'time', click on 'custom' straightaway.
Place the cursor into the block you want time. Right click in the block select format cell. In the numbers tab select "TIME" and later how you want it to register within the block.

Good luck
Click on FORMAT afterwards Cell - you can conveyance the format of the numbers surrounded by individual cell to time, currency, decimal places, etc

The route I do it is convert hrs and mins to hrs using decimals. That passageway it works out the rate pretty with alacrity and glibly. Getting staff to work to nearest quarter of an hour simplifies it too.

I use Excel to work out payroll using my own set up
e-mail if you want a copy.
You hold to enter the times surrounded by the correct format. i.e

HH:MM:SS AM/PM

You can see that hour, minutes & second are separated by colons ":" not "." (Press Shift and the Key to the right of "L")

You enjoy to own atleast HH:MM format. For example if you enter 5 PM, you own to type either
5:00 PM or (not simply 5)
17:00
Even if you enter 17, you can format it to show 5:00 PM or 5:00 by shifting the format (Cell - Format - Time - HH:MM AM/PM)
