Point of Sale systems jammy to use and cheap?

I enjoy be exploring several option for point of public sale systems. I am exit up a seasonal store so it doesn't enjoy to be the best possible system although I would similar to to own the details close to a barcode scanner, credit card reader, and thermal printer. I already enjoy my own computer and monitor. It seem you can't find anything for smaller number that $1500 similar to Quick Books retail point of Dutch auction software. I am not found of quickbooks to fire up next to. I lately visit a store that used Microsoft Excel along near bluetooth barcode scanners and epson thermal printers. Im wondering if this is something anyone could do or if this sort of thing be done by a computer programmer. I only just can't dream of every retail business investing several thousand dollars in within point of mart (checkout) software and hardware systems within decree to conduct day by day business. Any small business owners PLEASE HELP! Thanks!
