It can't hurt to hold a witness, but reasonably it's not required. I own signed lease next to over 100 renters and own never have one witnessed and not a soul have ever asked for a witness.
If you want to be sure that the other get-together is who they voice that they are, trademark a photocopy of their driver license and hang on to it near the lease.
