Should I assume my credit cards are going to charge me extra interest contained by Europe?
Leaving for Europe, from U.S., in two weeks. My girlfriend said one of her cards charges her an extra percentage for foreign purchases. That's a little sneaky, isn't it?
Is this a standard? Do you enjoy any that don't?
Answers: Yeah its usually like 1%, but look at it like this. You acquire a better rate than at the money changers. Even if you bring cash, they usually charge more than 1% to change it so you are really making out better using your card. Be vigilant with cash advance though, because you usually get a standard 3% cash finance fee + then you would hold another 1% for foreign exchange.
It's not extra interest, it's a fee to change the money from dollars to anything currency they're changing it to.
Which is weird, because it's liberal of just theoretical money, not actual dollars.
Best point to do: see if your hotel, etc., can charge you in american dollars. Then there will be no exchange payment.

My kid is going to europe next year and we were told to capture this special prepaid card through the tour people.
