I enjoy bank a cheque but am missing that same amount from my article?

I recently sold an item on ebay and the buyer paid me by cheque. I received a cheque for lb39.50 and i bank it in with lb250 change. I checked my online bank statement and have get a remittance of lb289.50. But I am missing lb39.50 from my account. Anybody know why?

nb. the buyer has told me that the money have gone out of her account already.

Answers:    There could be several explanations.
