How do i dance something like End of Perioud Posting within the common ledger?

I'm currently posting end of period info into the general ledger accounts. Do i use the totals from the special journals and put them within the relevant general ledger accounts?

For example say the total of accounts payable contained by the Purchases Journal is 500 in the Cash Payments Journal is 200... How would i go give or take a few this.
