How can a company charge $269.00 for a DVR they're "leasing" to you?

I'm buying a second HDTV for my home and considered necessary to acquire another HD DVR for that set. It seem that my sattelite provider (starts beside a D and ends near a V) requirements to charge me $269.00, plus a monthly levy to "lease" a DVR that become their property! If I'm paying that much money, shouldn't I "own" it and be capable of vend it afterwards? At the really smallest, my provider should reimburse me the $269.00 since they can "lease" it to another dumb schmuck.
