The factor used to create the index are time expentancy, literacy rate, and schooling power. The greater these numbers are, the sophisticated the HDI. According to the current HDI register, Norway, Iceland, Australia, Ireland, Sweden, Canada, and Japan (in order) own greater HDI's than the United States. (Notice how 3 Nordic countries are contained by that)
