What should be the desired college annual rate of return?
My Son is 7, so I'm thinking more or less college for him. I hold no view on what to start doing immediately to prepare for college. Should the desired rate of return be lower than 6% or difficult? And what does that penny-pinching if truth be told?
Answers:
Your desired rate of return should be difficult, but for calculation purposes it should be lower. You should desire the best rate you can take, but you should be conservative and presume you will not acquire it. So 6% is in actual fact a touch low, but it is acceptable. You enjoy eleven years until college starts and fifteen until it finishes so you can occupy more risk due to the long time horizon. A seven or eight percent return within a stock/bond mix is fair.
