Investing option?

i am sticking my big toe in to the pond of investing and do not enjoy a clue

what are some safer options compared to stocks or mutual funds?

Answers:    Safe? Money market, CDs, maybe some bonds.

But I'd only just call those investments, as you are unlikely to outpace inflation in need taking any risk.
Money Markets
Certificates of deposit (CDs)
Bonds
DRIPs
You could look at a Roth IRA. You could put in up to 9k in the past April 15th . Here's a good calculator for you to see if a Roth is what you're looking for. Everything is also heavily dependent on your age.

Also if your company have a 401k, you could try to put as much toward that as you can live without. Most employer match your contributions, so you instantly start out ahead. Here's a righteous 401k calculator too, I think it single works with Internet Explorer-

Investments safer than stocks and mutual funds are treasury bonds and municipal bonds. But they will never net you rich.
