As a brand new boss, how could you prevent a fruitless finding?

Don't want anything. Make your subordinates (or superiors)decide. If it turns out wrong, they did it not you. If it turns out right, filch the credit for your "enlightened leadership" and "suitability."

It is simply impossible. As a representative, you are rewarded to produce decision. All decision are base on incomplete and sometimes imprecise information. This lead to desperate decision. How do you take perfect at making devout decision? By making desperate ones!
I agree next to Shane and I will filch it one step further. Take the time to find out the knob business drivers (areas of focus) of your business, department and your boss and his boss. In those areas be the most punctilious, ask question, be as informed as possible.
One other point. Just because ethnic group work for you, does not be set to that they do not hold expensive opinion. Ultimately, the decree will be yours, but if someone on your staff have be doing it for years ask them. It will not create you look week, they will respect you more for it.
And lastly, if you basically don't know, transmit your boss that. Say "Boss, I don't know the answer to this one, which instrument would you shift?" and listen. Doing that once or twice will be fine next to them. Just don't do it over and over on duplicate topic, next you will be see as startled to net a finding and that could kill in cold blood your likelihood for further growth.
