MS have a vision that software be the only knob to success. Apple believed (and still does) that the best experience is have by a marriage of software and hardware. MS pimped their software to anyone who would bring it. Apple held their ground.
Look at the recent history. Apple has have a tremendous run of success within the past 5 years compared to MS dismal stock ceremonial. Apple now clearly have the upper hand. While MS may hold on to a dominant Windows franchise in business' hand for the next decade, they may not also, especially if they keep hold of spitting out crap like Vista.
The concluding winner have not yet be decided. The time of war has really lately begun...
