I'm a 23 year older singer/songwriter and I'm moving to Austin,TX to further my music profession. Any suggestion?
I’ve decided to move to Austin, TX to further pursue a career surrounded by music. I currently live in South Carolina which is also home to performers such as James Brown, Hootie & the Blowfish, Angie Stone, Chubby Checker and Dizzie Gillespie (just to pet name a few), but they all eventually left SC to further their career. SC is nice, but opportunities for significant growth in the music biz are few and far between around here.
I chose Austin, TX because I own a few industry connects over there and some family surrounded by San Antonio which is about 45 min away from Austin. I’m really excited about the move and I get the impression this is going to separate me from all the wannabe’s, but I’m nervous because it’s going to be a really big move (over 1,100 miles to be exact).
I hold 3 months left before I move (Aug. 2008); any (musical, personal, professional, and/or financial) warning?
P.S.
I'm giving myself 1 year to do what I need to do. If by then I haven't, I'm moving spinal column to SC to start a family.

Keep in close contact next to your (presumed) family in SC, put aside a little bit of all money you put together, make some friends there as you would expect and learn the tricks of the trade only to credit your unique style. sounds like you own a plan. Good Luck it takes balls
It's going to run longer than a year...you're only 23...give it five years. I'm not sure how experienced you are so I'll start out by aphorism: learn the ins and outs. Pay your dues if you want full respect, and make sure you cover yourself throught everything. Copyriting is a big issue. Make sure you protect your creative projects so that not a soul else will cash in on them. "Everything you requirement to know about the music business" is a great book that can help you along the path. Trust your gut when it comes to learning whom you can trust. Make sure they are not just out to get hold of access to your fame.
First thing you will entail is a talent lawyer and an agent. Do not sign anything without proper due diligence. If you don't know what a word vehicle, do not sign it!! Seek out people you can trust and can count on, because you're quest for your dream is going to be hard and you will use what you're going through to write some great songs, beyond a shadow of a doubt, but you will need these people to also sustain you.
Good luck on following your dreams...but administer it time-anything worthwhile is worth it!!
