I give attention to it's unprofessional to update your boss that you're looking around unless it's an internal tranfer. It's ok to drop hints, but counter-productive to endow with an ultimatum. Everyone is replaceable, so coming out looking approaching an arrogant and manipulative SOB will lone hurt your reputation and your adjectives.
However, after you bring the offer(s), I muse it's faultlessly fine to disclose that if: 1) you really are primed to go away, and 2) it's a lawful give. What you're communicating is that you are expensive to someone else, but you would prefer to stay beside the company.
I recommend:
1) Develop a suitable relationship near your boss. Request to hold a short 30-min slot over lunch or something and ask in the order of how he think you are doing (mini-review).
