I actually agreed near everything she said. And just from my own inspection and reading, I know she was unfolding the truth. I especially like the flab heels/skinny heels argument - how advertising manifestly changes fashion so that you feel resembling you are forced to go out and buy the most up-to-date fashionable clothes to nurture the "golden arrow of consumerism". And not just clothes, but computers, gadget like i-pods, cars, toys etc, etc.
You know that adage - "Keeping up with the Joneses"? Well to be precise what that means - going out and buying up to date stuff - not just to preserve up with the neighbours - but because the public relations says you must. Most relatives have no notion of just how much they are man manipulated.
I REFUSE to be manipulate. In my house we ALWAYS turn the TV sound rotten when the ads are on TV. Have you ever notice how the sound is other turned up (at the station) when the ads start? It is highly annoying, so we just turn our nouns off. That approach we do not get influenced or manipulate by the ads.
In my house we hold 2 computers. One is the old one - its very soon 8 years old, it used to hold windows 98 but have been upgraded to window XP. The RAM cannot be physically increased, so its slowing down a lot more because within are a lot more websites out nearby that need more than 512 KB of RAM to run. My son uses it and he get very frustrated when some sites dont work, because we dont enjoy enough memory or we own some "very celebrated piece of must have" software missing. We will not go out and buy software freshly because the internet says we want it. Software is expensive. If my son has to miss out on that distinctive website - well he can find another site that does not stipulation to use such sophisticated software.
As far as I am concerned - the advertising can progress jump within a lake. I will buy what I choose to buy when I choose to buy it.
