Newspaper hype rates and commissions?
OK, I'll keep this simple:
A. Tabloid-sized sports newspaper
B. 5,000 Circulation
Two segment question:
1. What would be a fair price to charge for a 4" x 4" commercial?
2. If someone sells an ad for me, what percentage commission should they receive on the classified ad sale?
I have published a ski tabloid for the past eight years, but am rethinking the whole point and am turning it into a general sports paper for a wider audience. Advertising have never been my strong point and am looking for some guidance.

Answers: I've be in advertising for almost 7 years very soon and am trying to answer your question. But there are factor that go into the cost you haven't mentioned..

Is it reflective or newsprint?
How much does it cost you to print each page- this goes into the commission q&a.
Typically newsprint is bought by multiplying the columns span of the ad by the height. For example- 3 col x 4" would be an public notice size equaling 12 Column inches.
You must know how much a page costs you to print before determining how much each personal ad (column inch) can cost.
Typically, newspapers pay a net or hourly figure, plus commission to their salespeople. The commission can range between 8-15%, base on whether they hit a certain revenue goal respectively month.
Premium positions, such as page 3 (first right hand page of the publication) and the back cover can be sold at a premium cost for their visibility. You may consider doing a small strip running across the bottom of the cover of the thesis, for front page positioning you can also charge a premium for this small, but valuable space. Great for sports-related websites!
